Delta Electronics Inc, a Taiwan-based firm that makes switching power supplies and DC brushless fans, said yesterday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding on research collaboration with Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Government, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Under the MOU, Delta will set up an environmental protection research and development center in the area and increase the size of its staff from several hundred to 2,000.

The Shanghai R&D center will focus on renewable energy, including solar energy, wind electricity and fuel cells, said Jesse Chou, spokesman for Delta, adding that the newest building will be completed in the second quarter.

The administration of Pudong New Area's science and technology park will provide favorable policies including tax cuts and credit, said Chou.

R&D capital expenditure is equivalent to more than 5% of Delta's annual revenue, according to Chou.

The Shanghai center is one of the company's major R&D centers, he said.
